MI Rejects KKR, LSG for Surya; Rohit Returns as Captain

Suryakumar Yadav in an LSG jersey

In this blog, we’ll discuss why Mumbai Indians rejected every offer for Suryakumar Yadav and how Rohit Sharma is set to return as captain. We will also look at the Tilak Varma plan and what this means for MI going into the auction.

For a wider look at Mumbai’s squad decisions, including their predicted retentions, releases and auction plans, read our Mumbai Indians IPL 2027 squad and auction strategy.

Suryakumar Yadav Is Not Leaving Mumbai

Right after the Hardik deal, KKR and LSG reportedly approached Mumbai about Suryakumar Yadav. Mumbai put out an official statement: no offer, no player package, nothing will move them. Cricbuzz reports Rohit Sharma played a big part in convincing the team to keep him.

This is smart. Losing Surya and Hardik in the same window would have been a mistake. After a poor season and being dropped from the national team, Surya looks hungry to prove himself. Teams that were hoping to pick him up will have to look elsewhere.

Rohit Sharma Set to Captain Mumbai Again

Rohit Sharma set to captain Mumbai Indians again

Rohit Sharma is now likely to return as Mumbai Indians captain for IPL 2027. The Indian Express reported that the franchise wanted him to take charge again and that Rohit initially suggested Tilak Varma as a long-term leadership option. The management, however, requested Rohit to take the captaincy himself, and he has agreed, according to the report.

That would bring Mumbai back to the captain who led them to five IPL titles. It also gives the franchise an experienced leader as they reshape the squad following a difficult 2026 season.

The appointment has been widely reported, but the franchise has not yet made a formal public announcement. The timing of the announcement could depend on the retention process and the team’s preparations for the auction.

What It Means

With Arshdeep Singh joining Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar staying, and Rohit back in charge, Mumbai have fixed their problems in a single trade window. Tilak Varma stays in the picture as the long-term leader. Respect to Mumbai: sharp negotiators, again.
