The Chennai Super Kings-Sunrisers Hyderabad trade has raised a big question: have CSK weakened their bowling to add two all-rounders? Let’s break down what both teams gain, where Chennai could struggle, and why Prashant Veer may be on his way out.
In our Hardik Pandya trade breakdown, we discussed how CSK were reportedly reluctant to include Nathan Ellis in a potential deal. Now Ellis has moved to SRH alongside Khaleel Ahmed. That is quite a turnaround.
The CSK-SRH Trade
- CSK receive: Liam Livingstone (₹6 crore) and Jack Edwards (₹3 crore)
- SRH receive: Khaleel Ahmed (₹4.8 crore) and Nathan Ellis (₹2 crore)
The combined contract value moving to CSK is ₹9 crore, while SRH take on ₹6.8 crore. Livingstone joins at a reduced fee after SRH originally acquired him for ₹13 crore. These are confirmed trade details, but the cricketing value will depend on how each player fits into the 2027 XI.
Why CSK Could Regret This Trade
The pace-bowling depth looks thin. Khaleel offered a left-arm option, while Ellis brings death-over variations. Losing both in one deal leaves CSK needing to rebuild important parts of their pace attack. Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh, Matt Henry, Mukesh Choudhary, Ramakrishna Ghosh and Jamie Overton are among the options, but Chennai will need enough reliable overs across the powerplay and death.
The overseas combination is not straightforward. Livingstone, Overton and Noor Ahmad could all be in contention for overseas places, depending on form and conditions. That may make it difficult to fit every overseas recruit into the XI. Livingstone’s ability to contribute with off-spin and leg-spin gives the management flexibility, but it does not automatically replace specialist pace bowling.
What exactly is the role for the incoming players? Livingstone was passed over by teams for two seasons, did not play last season, and was the weakest link at RCB before that. Edwards is a seam-bowling all-rounder who missed the entire 2026 season with a foot injury and is yet to make his IPL debut. Both could prove valuable, but neither is a guaranteed starter.
The trade may be a calculated attempt to fix Chennai’s middle-order power and all-rounder balance. Still, giving up two specialist quicks in the same transaction creates a bowling problem that CSK must address before the season begins.
SRH’s Bowling Attack Is Getting Stronger

SRH have added two different pace options. Khaleel provides left-arm variety and has already delivered a 15-wicket IPL season for CSK in 2025. Ellis offers slower balls, cutters and death-over experience. Alongside options such as T Natarajan, Ishan Malinga, Pat Cummins and Nitish Kumar Reddy, the attack looks more varied on paper.
Cummins’ workload and fitness will matter, while Khaleel and Ellis also need to return from injury-disrupted 2026 campaigns. If they are fit and available, SRH could have a formidable bowling group. A proven finisher would make their squad look even more complete.
CSK May Release Prashant Veer
Cricbuzz has reported that CSK are considering releasing Prashant Veer and could try to buy him back at the auction for a lower price. The franchise paid ₹14.2 crore for Veer and the same amount for Kartik Sharma at the previous auction — a combined ₹28.4 crore on two uncapped players.
Veer scored 90 runs in six matches and did not take a wicket in IPL 2026. Releasing him could free up funds, but it would not necessarily mean CSK have given up on his potential. The buy-back strategy is a gamble: another team could bid higher, leaving Chennai without the player they originally wanted.
There is a wider lesson here. Auction price and future potential are not the same as immediate value. CSK may now need to make cold, practical decisions to rebuild the squad, even if that means revisiting an expensive call.
Final Verdict
SRH appear to have addressed a clear need by adding two pace bowlers, while CSK have backed their batting and all-rounder options. Chennai may still make the trade work, but they have left themselves with a significant bowling question to answer. The mini-auction will show whether this was a clever squad reset or a deal they come to regret.
